As the drivers head to Istanbul this weekend, we are treated to another chapter in one of the closest title fights in recent memory. With the fresh surface and heavy rain last year, it’s hard to say who has the edge on this circuit, and with a 60% chance of rain this weekend, it could another slippery one. This is the early edition of the Turkish GP preview, with a second iteration coming out Friday after some of the practice sessions have been completed.
Today’s focus is on the title fight, and why I have locked in Max as my pick for the weekend. Max has shown that this year he wants to stop Lewis from achieving a record 8th WDC. Additionally, his team has backed him up with one of the strongest Red Bulls since the Vettel days. Now even though last year’s track was extremely slippery, Max had a considerable edge, posting the fastest times in all three Free Practices, and the first two Qualifying sessions, with Mercedes trailing by a larger-than-usual margin.
Looking back at Sochi, we saw Max starting at the back of the grid and finishing on the podium in P2. A mega drive combining skill and strategy, Max was able to salvage points and keep the championship battle tight. The new engine that gave Max his grid penalty was also the force behind his charge, this fresh engine will prove to be the difference maker this weekend and will see Max at the top of the timing tables Friday through Sunday. I am heavy on Max already for Qualifying and the Race before the line moves. If you think differently, let me know in the troll box!
